Radiant heat is becoming more and more popular among new home construction projects around the country. Homeowners are learning how heated floors are not only the most efficient home heating systems, but they add luxurious comfort and convenience. Radiant floor heating systems are also very versatile, and can be used under just about any type of flooring.
Heated floor systems are not difficult to install. Much of the simple installation, and layout of the heating element can be done by the homeowner.
Warmzone® offers one of the largest selections of floor heating systems on the market. This wide variety ensures that customers have access to the ideal system that will work best for heating their specific floor types. While most heated floors are installed during the initial construction phase, Warmzone also carries floor heating systems that can be installed to heat existing floors.
If you have access to the floor joists, you can install either the RetroHeat® film heating element, or the low-voltage FloorHeat STEP® system. Both systems feature thin, flexible heating elements that can be stapled up between the joists.
The RetroHeat floor heating element (the most popular choice) features paper-thin “film” heat (just 0.016-inch thick). The panels are available for joists in 12, 16, and 24-inch widths. (Measurements are taken from the center of one joist to the other.) After the thin heating panel is stapled up between the joists, the electrical connections are made and common batt insulation is placed over the heating element. This insulation virtually eliminates heat loss, and directs all the warmth upward through the floor. RetroHeat floor heating systems are UL approved and carry a 25-year manufacturer warranty. This option is one of the best values for installing radiant heat under an existing floor surface. This is an affordable heating solution that can be used to heat a variety of floors, but is particularly well suited for heating laminate floors.
The FilmHeat™ Floor Heating system is similar to the RetroHeat system, and is one of the best values for installing radiant heat under laminate and floating floors. The heating panel is laid out under the laminate flooring without any need for adhesives, facilitating quick, easy, and affordable installation. Because the FilmHeat element is so thin, and there is no need for mortar, installing this system doesn't require any floor buildup. the heating panels can be cut to their proper length on site. The panels are rolled out over the underlayment, and the floating floor covering is installed over the film. No alarms, no special tools, and no self-leveling compounds are needed. After the FilmHeat heating elements are secured, the electrical connections are made and the laminate floor is installed directly over the panels.
The low-voltage FloorHeat STEP system is installed the same way, however, this is a more expensive option. The heating element is a thin, flexible polymer panel that is also self-regulating. The durable heating panel is so rugged that it is one of the most popular roof heating systems on the market. The heating element is installed directly under the roof shingles to keep areas completely free of snow and ice.
The most popular floor heating system is the trusted ComfortTile® system. This consists of thin heat resistance cable that is available on spools or in mats for easy roll-out installation. The cable is pre-spaced and affixed to a flexible mat with an adhesive backing. The mat is rolled out over the subfloor and secured. Thinset is applied over the mat and then the flooring is installed. While ComfortTile is especially well-suited to heat tile and marble floors, it is also commonly used to warm laminate and even carpeted floors. For decades ComfortTile floor heating systems have been warming homes throughout Northern America. The cable carries a 25-year manufacturer warranty.
In-Slab™ heat cable features a larger, more rugged cable. It is designed for installation in concrete slabs. This is a common, affordable solution for heating basement floors. Just about any type of flooring can be installed over the concrete slab, making the affordable In-Slab system a popular floor heating solution.
There are other floor heating components used in conjunction with ComfortTile heat cable. One popular choice is the Prodeso® floor heating membrane. This flexible membrane serves as an uncoupling, waterproofing system for heating floors without expansion joints in the screed. It is laid out over the subfloor and ComfortTile is then routed through the pre-configured channels, ensuring the correct spacing and making installation of the heat cable easy. This system only has a floor buildup of less than ¼ inch.
Electric floor heating systems feature precise control. Each room (or zone) can be operated separately by its own thermostat. And Warmzone offers a variety of the most advanced programmable and non-programmable thermostats in the industry.
